CounterUASWorld Summary

The U.S. Department of Defense has selected four directed-energy systems for JIATF-401’s counter-UAS pilot program, aimed at expanding the operational use of high-energy laser (HEL) and high-powered microwave (HPM) technologies for homeland defense. The selected systems are AeroVironment’s Palletized High-Energy Laser, Epirus’ Leonidas HPM, Kord’s Firefly HEL, and Boeing’s Compact Laser Weapon. The program will evaluate system performance, operational requirements, costs, and integration within layered air defense architectures. Conducted in coordination with the FAA, U.S. Northern Command, and military services, the initiative seeks to assess how directed-energy capabilities can complement existing counter-drone solutions. Additional technologies will be evaluated during a directed-energy shoot-off planned for December at Dugway Proving Ground.
